Fairmont Gateway Connector: Fairmont, WV

Project Abstract

Providing an improved highway link between downtown Fairmont and I-79, the Fairmont Gateway Connector is a multi-phased economic development and transportation project that alleviates congestion while focusing on treasured community landmarks. Green spaces, walking/bike paths, and a unifying theme maximize the visual connection and provide a “gateway” leading into the economic center of Marion County from Interstate 79. Starting in 1991, early and continuing communication between the WVDOH, FHWA, Fairmont/Marion County Planning Committee, Downtown Fairmont Community, and the general public brings the "gateway" vision to reality utilizing context sensitive solutions planning, design and construction techniques.

To facilitate the design of the Fairmont Gateway Connector, numerous demolitions took place. To maintain community cohesion valued resources were identified in the planning phase and restored or reconstructed. Renovation of the Stepping Stone Children’s Facility, construction of the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission’s (MCPARC) Welcome Center, as well as site development and functional replacement for a new Marion County 911 Center provided efficient and effective use of local resources. Carved stone from the old Children’s Facility was carefully dismantled and will be reused as the façade of the new MCPARC Welcome Center. The Mainstreet Fairmont organization built upon the landscaping and architectural theme of the Connector project by incorporating brick pavers, decorative light posts and trash cans into Fairmont’s mainstreet renovations. The City of Fairmont’s new parking garage mimics the railing design of the Jefferson Street Bridge by utilizing a special pattern in the precast concrete slabs. Embracing the "gateway" vision, numerous stakeholders partnered to generate plans for a comprehensive connector that leads travelers through reforested green space and two roundabouts to Merchant Street Gateway Park. Designed walking and bike paths create a trail from Interstate 79 to Fairmont State College, accommodating increased walkability and pedestrian safety. The shared stakeholder vision and use of context sensitive solutions techniques fosters development and implementation of the Fairmont Gateway Connector reality and will provide lasting community value.
