Highway through Aabenraa, Denmark

Project Abstract

"The three-km-long, heavily trafficked highway through Aabenraa has been converted according to the principles of environmentally adapted through roads, with due respect paid, however, to the substantial traffic flow. This has reduced car speeds, has made a coherent bicycle route network, has resulted in a falling number of accidents, and has increased the feeling of security for the light road users."

Aabenraa-112a:
"Aabenraa is one of the four regional centres in the country of Southern Jutland. It has 15,600 inhabitants and thus ranks among the 20 largest towns in Jutland. The town is a centre for the regional public transport system, and the port has regional importance. The converted Southern Jutland highway runs through the town from north to south under the names of Haderslvvej, H.P. Hanssens Gade, Skibbroen and Kystvej. When the [regional] motorway was opened in 1982, the highway through Aabenraa was declassified to an ordinary highway. It now constitutes part of the overall road network ...and the neighbour towns still use the highway, which is the fastest route. Especially the road's role as the connection between the harbour and the surroundings generates some heavy traffic." The converted road features a gate of trees and lighting, narrowed lane widths, cycle tracks, central traffic islands and improved bus stops.
