Kanawha Trace Trail Accommodated During US35 Construction: Frazier’s Bottom, WV

Project Abstract

The Kanawha Trace Trail was opened for use in October 1962. In 2007, construction of new US35 four-lane alignment threatened to temporarily impact the use of the Kanawha Trace Trail. A three-day event sponsored by the Tri-State Area Council, Boy Scouts of America invited campers, bikers and hikers from across the country to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Kanawha Trace. In an effort to facilitate hikers, Boy Scouts, and mountain bike enthusiasts through the US35 construction, the WVDOH began immediate communication with the construction contractor Mountaineer Grading Company (MGC), the consultant HNTB Corporation, Inc., and the Tri-State Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

To safely navigate the workzone, the WVDOH, Mountaineer Grading Company, and the Tri-State Area Council of the BSA provided outreach to the users of the trail in a context sensitive solutions effort. The Tri-State Area Council of the BSA placed documents on their website that briefed all registered hikers on safety and passage through the construction embankment area. Signs and flags were placed at the trail crossing. An orange safety fence with gateway entrances (at each end of the workzone) served as a visual indicator to stop and obtain guidance from the contractor before crossing the temporary trail.

Under the new US35 alignment, a 120” Aluminum Coated Pipe was assembled to create the permanent Kanawha Trace Trail. Roadway embankment slopes on either side of the crossing create an easy transition from the Kanawha Trace Trail, under US35, to the other side. A 4’wide aggregate path leads pedestrians and bikers through the underpass, while LED Solar Powered lights illuminate the passage.

Collaboration with the stakeholders minimized delay and impact to the Kanawha Trace Trail 45th Anniversary Celebration. The US35 Crossing of the Kanawha Trace Trail provides harmony with the natural environment and increases the safety and mobility of trail users.
