Project Abstract
This project covers a portion of NM 14, the Turquoise Trail, which has cultural, historic and visual features that are significant for the community. Reconstruction of the roadway and three bridges was necessary due to deteriorated conditions and safety hazards posed by sharp curves, inadequate shoulders, and limited sight distance.
Following some initial controversy, NMDOT took a CSS approach and involved the community extensively throughout the process, including construction, to ensure that the design solution met the transportation need as well as the community’s desire to minimize visual and environmental impacts from the roadway and maintain the rural and scenic nature of the area.
Project Overview:
* Reconstruct the roadway with 11-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders
* Realign the intersections of County Roads 42 and 44/45 for improved sight distance and safer turning on to and off of the highway
* Construct new bridge over San Marcos Arroyo
* Improve the pullout areas just north of Cerrillos with landscaping and signs/historic markers and provide new pullout areas along the highway
* Pave driveways/access points to the right-of-way fence line
* Provide a Context Sensitive Constructed project
