The Spring Mountain National Recreation Area (SMNRA) is in close proximity to the Las Vegas metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing urban areas in the US, with development continuing to expand northward toward the recreation area. Tourism is the major industry in the Las Vegas Valley, with annual visitation currently estimated at approximately 36,000,000 and increasing yearly. The SMNRA is directly impacted by both of these trends, in addition to the marked increase in commuter traffic generated from local mountain residential and commercial development.
Visiting motorists frequently park on vegetated roadside areas or on private residential streets, which cause damage to sensitive environmental resources and create neighborhood nuisances. Traffic congestion also creates barriers to emergency response and evacuation efforts in SMNRA for police, fire, medical, and other emergency responders. All of these problems are compounded during icy and snowy weather conditions. The SMNRA Transportation Study will respond to these safety, traffic, parking, environmental, and community impact issues.
