People want to live and work in places where they can safely and conveniently walk and/or bicycle and not always have to deal with worsening traffic congestion, road rage and the fight for a parking space.

Harkey (Principal Investor). It provides background information on how pedestrians who are blind or visually impaired cross streets, and how Accessible Pedestrian Signals assist this process.

The U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have released a report that describes a plan for marketing pedestrian and bicycle safety to different Hispanic populations in the United States. The report includes materials in different formats that were developed to be used to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety issues in the Hispanic community.

In June, 2003, the Rudin Center for Transportation Policy and Management hosted a peer-to-peer exchange to lay a foundation for dealing with the state of the practice and processes related to context sensitive solutions, and to identify specific examples that could be used as benchmarks for lessons learned and best practices in large central cities. Examples were drawn from Boston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, and Philadelphia.

University Place, WA
Bridgeport Way is a busy boulevard with a very thin median. Many of its crosswalks are signal controlled with high quality signs, markings and pavings, and lighting.

Sidewalk extensions, reconfigured crosswalks, and additional greening of the area have helped transform this intersection that was known for pedestrian accidents and high-speed turns. Sidewalk extensions were painted on the street in the short term and outlined with temporary bollards to test the impact of the recommendations on traffic flow. Once it was clear that the solutions worked, the project was built out in final form, with slate pavers, granite curbs, new crosswalks, landscaping, bollards, and changes in traffic light phasing. Capital construction was completed in 2001.

Tucson, AZ
Tucson has the greatest variety of successful mid-block crossings in the nation. Pedestrian actuated half-signals allow pedestrians to cross each section of the street separately.
Mid-block Crosswalks: School Zone in Olympia, WA
Olympia, WA
This school-zone crossing boasts a staggered, paved crosswalk through a nicely planted pedestrian island. Staggered crossings force pedestrians to look right and face traffic before crossing the second portion of the road.

This bridge treatment provides safe sidewalks separated from the bike lanes by a guard-rail, with four traffic lanes and a raised median.
Town Center of Nakskov, Denmark
"In the town of Nakskov, a bicycle route network has been established in and around the town center. The project has not only resulted in much better conditions for the cyclists, but has also improved the town aesthetically and given Nakskov its own character."

Speed Zone: Dunedin, Florida
Dunedin, FL
"Dunedin's special speed designation emulates the 30 km zone common in several European countries. In addition, there is a diagonal parking on alternating blocks, creating a zigzag pattern that cars must carefully navigate."
Shopping Street in Assens
"As part of the 'More Beautiful Streets' project in which the Road Directorate in cooperation with local authorities carry out traffic calming projects with a particular emphasis on the visual environment, the main street in Assens has been converted to a 20 km/h street."
Mid-block Crosswalks: City Place, West Palm Beach, FL
West Palm Beach, FL
City Place has one of the nation's most attractive crossings, with lots of pavers, palm trees and other architectural details. Chicanes on both sides of the road create a tropical island for crossing pedestrians.
